Dean Henderson has told Manchester United that he wants to replace David de Gea as No 1 or be allowed to seek pastures new. The goalkeeper has been hugely impressive on loan at Sheffield United over the past two years.

He helped he Blades earn promotion in 2019 and his performances this term have seen him touted as England’s No 1. Henderson is due to return to Old Trafford this summer where he will present Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a huge problem.

De Gea has regularly been backed by the United boss despite committing a host of errors throughout the season.

The Red Devils signed the Spaniard to a lucrative long-term deal only last summer leaving them in a difficult predicament. Solskjaer has hailed Henderson as a future United No 1, but the 23-year-old doesn’t appear to be patient

Chelsea have been heavily linked with him as they eye a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga who was dropped for the final few games of their season.

Henderson has previously expressed his desire to become a starter for United but admits he will look elsewhere if he believes that the door is closed. “It feels like I always hit a brick wall. Maybe I’ll get the opportunity [to play for Man Utd], maybe I won’t, then I’ll have to look down a different avenue.”

Solskjaer himself has praised Henderson’s improvement during his time away from Manchester and has predicted big things. “Dean has had a fantastic couple of years at Sheffield United,” he said.
