The incident occurred hours after Wisdom had featured for Derby on Saturday in a 2-1 victory over Championship rivals Reading.
“He sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital.” Merseyside police are investigating the attack.
It is hoped Wisdom will be released from hospital later this week but it is unclear when he will be able to return to action.
A source told The Sun: “It’s awful news. He must have been on a high after his team played so well.
“All his fans wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully he’ll be back on the pitch again soon.”
